Shilpita Sen is a dual-licensed attorney committed to dedicating her life to public service through her advocacy, activism, and legal scholarship. Her passion and dedication for advocacy were recognized by the United Nations Crime Congress when she was merely 21 and was invited as an ‘Individual Expert’ in 2015. Having participated in the UN CCPCJ as a panelist over the last 5 years has strengthened her belief in effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels. Her work primarily focuses on access to justice and protection of rights, particularly for women and children from indigenous communities, criminal justice reforms, gender equality, human rights, ethnic and racial justice, cybercrime and harassment, and community development. She was born and raised in Shillong, India, and holds a BA LLB(H) degree from O.P Jindal Global University. She volunteered and worked at various organizations and agencies in India that provided confidential advocacy services for women and children victims of domestic and sexual violence. Shilpita was awarded the Dean’s Achievement scholarship by The University of Arizona to pursue her Juris Doctorate. Her 1L summer, she worked as a Judicial Extern for The Hon. Bruce G. Macdonald, U.S. District Court – District of Arizona, Tucson. She then worked for a year as a 38(d) student for the Pima County Attorney’s Office (Criminal Division – Misdemeanor Unit), wherein she tried several Bench Trials and Evidentiary Hearings. After graduating from UA Law, she worked for a Criminal Defense Firm in Phoenix. Shilpita earned her JD and received her JD Certification in Criminal Law and Policy and LLM in Indigenous Law and Policy from the University of Arizona. She is currently pursuing her Doctorate of Juridical Science in Indigenous Law and Policy while serving as the President of the Graduate & Professional Student Council at the University of Arizona.She is a member of the State Bar of Minnesota; is awaiting her admission to the State Bar of New York and is admitted to practice in India.
